English translation

Good rain knows its time right;

It will fall when comes spring.

With wind it steals in night;

Mute, it moistens each thing.

Over wild lanes dark cloud spreads;

In boat a lantern looms.

Dawn sees saturated reds;

The town's heavy with blooms.

Meaning and imagery

Du Fu treats the rain as a thoughtful person that "knows" when it is needed and arrives quietly at night. The famous couplet "随风潜入夜,润物细无声" is now used to praise good teachers and gentle influence. Dark clouds and a single lamp set the night scene; dawn reveals the result, flowers heavy with water across the whole city.

Background

Written in 761 at Du Fu's thatched cottage in Chengdu, one of the most peaceful periods of his life.
